![]() I go to RYM and see which of his/her releases are most highly regarded. ![]() Someone tells me to give Artist X a listen but doesn't mention a specific album. Country, rockabilly, mainstream hip-hop, and pop are probably overlooked to some extent.Īs I get older, I find the best use of the site for me is to compare releases by the same artist. I think metal, prog, and socially conscious hip-hop are all favored genres on the site. The demographics of RYM clearly favor those types of artists. In fact, I own several albums by that collective group of artists. I have nothing against any of the bands I mentioned. New and younger users to the site flock to the top-rated albums and create a feedback loop. At this point, the biases feed on themselves though. They all feature prominently on the RYM charts. Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, Neutral Milk Hotel, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, and Sigur Ros, among many others, were all loved by the cool kids of the first major internet generation. The most notable demographic skew at RYM is toward artists that were cool at the time of the internet boom, circa late-90s and early-00s. I'm now wondering if others have noticed some albums that you think deserves a better/worse rating but due to bias is not the rating you expect it to be. Now you could argue that it deserves that rating which is fine. I think there's just a bias against her because she's young and edgy. I think it's overall a good album and if I were to rate it it would be around 3.5. ![]() There's a good range of songs from sweet to melancholy to sinister. ![]() For an album that reached mainstream success, it is fairly experimental. I'm not like a die hard Billie Eillish fan but I can say that objectively I don't think it deserves that low of a rating. I particularly noticed this when I saw the rating for Billie Eillish's album "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" It's a 2.89 right now which is particularly low. The site is very helpful in discovering good albums and music, but admittedly it has its own biases too. It allows users to rate albums out of 5 stars, and you can look up rankings of which albums highly rated. ![]() So if you're a music buff you probably know. ![]()
